Shakedown Stockholm Up For Unsigned Music Awards

On the evening of Thursday 27th October, the first ever televised Unsigned Music Awards will be in full swing, with acts strolling down the red carpet of the Troxy Theatre in London, ready to meet hosts Laura Whitmore and Chris Stark.

With sixteen awards up for grabs including Best Music Video and Youth Music Award, the UMAs have been designed to celebrate the glorious waves of activity in the unsigned community which are so often undervalued.

It is an especially exciting event for the scene in Staffordshire and Cheshire, as local wonders, Shakedown Stockholm, have received a nomination for their acclaimed EP, The Reality of Truth, in the Best Produced/Engineered Record category, against just three other acts. ‘To be in the final four out of thousands of bands is an absolute honour, I still can’t believe it.’ Singer Davina Kettle, told REBEL, ‘I can say on behalf of the whole band and Mark Winterburn at Edge Studios, we are very excited and proud.’

The moment that Davina first heard the news will stay with her forever, ‘I was actually sat on the sofa with a brew and I just jumped up and ran into the kitchen to tell my mum.’ She laughs, ‘Then I rang Joanna [her twin sister and co-frontwoman] to double check the email because I couldn't quite believe it. It is probably one if the best emails we have ever received!’

Deciding the winner is a mammoth panel of esteemed musical minds, ‘Grammy award winning producers and major label A & Rs- it’s just mad to think that these people have actually heard our music now.’

The Reality of Truth was released last summer now it stands against three other nominees, How Can We Fix This from Sheilds, Dissolve from Wennick and Let’s Just Forget It from Jerry Williams. ‘They are all good artists, the standard is really high and to be nominated alongside that is an honour as well.’

The Unsigned Music Awards was founded by Simon O’Kelly, Georgia Thomas and Ben Connor last year after discovering their shared passion and desire to showcase unsigned musicians. ‘I really can’t wait to meet them. I just want to hug them and say thanks! Reading their story and their dedication to this event and helping unsigned bands is an inspiration.’

Davina couldn’t be more grateful and humble about their nomination, ‘I haven't even thought we could actually win this. But thinking of it if we do, it would be crazy, who knows what could happen next? And if we don't win, there’s no loss! A nomination is a win in itself.’

After having an amazing year, the seven-piece could not be more deserving of their nomination. Regardless of the outcome of the evening, Shakedown Stockholm have an incredible few months lined up. From playing at The Zanzibar Liverpool and at the Manchester City Etihad this weekend, to heading back into the studio to record a new single, the future for the band is bright. And it could be even brighter if they bag a win at the UMAs.
